The Food Standards Agency has released multiple alerts and information over the past two weeks regarding the contamination of food products with the illegal dye Sudan 1. This culminated in the recall of the offending products. www.food.gov.uk/news/pressreleases/2005/feb/fsasudan
Sudan dyes are used for colouring solvents, petrol, floor and shoe polishes, oil and waxes. They have been added to some chilli powder imported into the UK from India. Sudan is illegal in food in the EU and UK, and since July 2003 the EU has required that all chilli powders and curry powders must be certified as free from Sudan I.
RHM Technology can offer Sudan I, II, III and IV testing in spices and food products. Please contact us if you would like more information.
